How To Generate A Sleep Study Report in Windows 10

GENERAL
A Sleep Study Report is tool available on Windows 10 PCs that support the Modern Standby (S0 low power idle) sleep state.
A Sleep Study generates a report of connected standby quality over the last three days on the system.

The Sleep Study tells you how well the system slept and how much activity it experienced during that time.
While in the sleep state, the system is still doing some work, though at a lower frequency. Because the
resulting battery drain is not easily perceptible (you can’t see it draining), Microsoft built the Sleep Study
tool in Windows 10 to allow you to track what is happening. Microsoft thought of simply using traditional
logging to do this, but ironically, the logging itself would drain the battery. With this in mind, Microsoft designed
the Sleep Study tool to minimize its own impact on battery life, while tracking the battery draining activities.

You can use Sleep Study to see which apps and devices are most active during a sleep session.
Sleep Study reviews all the sleep sessions longer than 10 minutes and provides you with a report
that color codes each session according to its power consumption. A session is defined
as the period from Screen Off to Screen On. In cases when the system is plugged into AC power,
the policies are less stringent than when on battery power. While the tool still tracks connected
standby activity on AC power, it is more useful to identify unexpected drains on battery, or DC power.

To help you easily identify applications, devices and services with higher power consumption,
these are highlighted in RED or ORANGE in the report, and represent opportunities to extend your battery life.

This Tip will show you ho w to generate a Sleep Study report for Modern Standby quality in Windows 10.

NOTE: I generated this report while my laptop was using AC POWER and not while on battery power.

1.) Open an Elevated Command Prompt.
A.) on your keyboard, press Search button on Taskbar
B.)
type in search box: cmd
C.)
in results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator

NOTE: I used this method for opening an Elevated Command Prompt for demonstration. Feel free to use another method if you wish.

2.) Copy then Paste (to avoid typo's) the command you want to use below into the Elevated Command Prompt, and press Enter.

NOTE: It's recommended to save the report as a .html file to be able to easily use and read it.

A.) (For .html file with DEFAULT 3 day duration)

powercfg /SleepStudy /output %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\sleepstudy-report.html

(NOTE: For demonstration, I used this one)

OR

B.) (For .html file with SPECIFIED Duration)

powercfg /SleepStudy /output %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\sleepstudy-report.html /Duration 7 (<<<< example)

OR

C.) (For .xml file with DEFAULT 3 day duration)

powercfg /SleepStudy /output %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\sleepstudy-report.xml /XML

OR

D.) (For .xml file with SPECIFIED duration)

powercfg /SleepStudy /output %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\sleepstudy-report.xml /XML /Duration 7 (<<<< example)

NOTE: Substitute days in the commands above (Duration days) with a number 1 to 14 SPECIFIED number of days
you want to analyze for the report.

Location of Sleep Study Report .html file: Mine is the default location: C:\Users\current user\Desktop

Filter Option

Session Length:
Choose radial button: All or >10 min (I chose All radial button)

STATES: Reading across the page, choose 1 of the 6 radial buttons to see its individual readings in the columns. We'll be using the default setting, ALL

1.) All
2.) Active
3.) Standby
4.) Hibernate
5.) Shutdown
6.) Bug Check

Reading across will show the various results in each specific column for each individual session. These are labeled:

1.) START TIME
2.) DURATION
3.) STATE
4.) ENERGY CHANGE
5.) CHANGE RATE
6.) % LOW POWER STATE TIME

NOTE: We'll be using Sessions 1 and 2 for this demonstration. There will be multiple sessions listed throughout the report time period
based upon when the PC or Laptop was shutdown then restarted, in Sleep mode and when coming out of Sleep mode. This example
will show only 2 sessions for a specific time period as there simply isn't enough room to display them all here in this thread:

First Session: Shutdown
Second Session: Active

Installed Batteries

KeqHH.gif

A.) DESIGN CAPACITY tells you the size of the battery, in this case close to 30.5 watt hours (or 30,488 milliwatt hours)
B.) CAPACITY RATIO tells you how much energy can be stored in the battery before it is considered full.
C.) If low, the battery will have shorter battery life due to reduced capacity (for example, if the battery chemistry degrades)
D.) DRAIN RATES are based on percentage of (Design Capacity * Capacity Ratio)

Well, I for one have found this useful when I have questions about my battery drain
without being plugged into an AC outlet. It also helps to inform me based on this report's findings,
just how long my laptop can be in use productively and what are the most power consuming operations, services
and applications I need to be made aware of for my PC or Laptop's optimal operation.
