Host File

What it does
...

You can use a modified HOSTS file to block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers and possibly unwanted programs.
This is accomplished by blocking the connection(s) that supplies these little gems.
The Hosts file is loaded into memory (cache) at startup, so there is no need to turn on, adjust or change any settings with the exception of the DNS Client service (see below).
Windows automatically looks for the existence of a HOSTS file and if found, checks the HOSTS file first for entries to the web page you just requested.
The 0.0.0.0 (prefix) is considered the location of your computer, so when an entry listed in the MVPS HOSTS file is requested on a page you are viewing, your computer thinks 0.0.0.0 is the location of the file.

When this file is not located it skips onto the next file and thus the ad server is blocked from loading the banner, Cookie, or some unscrupulous tracker, or javascript file.

Example - the following entry 0.0.0.0 ad.doubleclick.net blocks all files supplied by that DoubleClick Server to the web page you are viewing.

This also prevents the server from tracking your movements.
Why? ... because in certain cases "Ad Servers"
like Doubleclick (and many others) will try silently to open a separate connection on the webpage you are viewing,
record your movements then yes ... follow you to additional sites you may visit.

In case you're wondering ... this all happens in microseconds, which is much faster than trying to fetch a file from half way around the world.
Another great feature of the HOSTS file is that it is a two-way file,
meaning if some parasite does get into your system (usually bundled with other products) the culprit can not get out (call home) as long as the necessary entries exist.

This is why it's important to keep your HOSTS file up to Date.

I would like to share my host file, this host blocks alot of bad unwanted sites, advertising, malware and ransomware websites. :)

Just rename the file from .txt to nothing and then it will change to a file extension.
Now put the file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and remember to back up your original host file just to be safe.

Ty but keep in mind also that when u use clean up , anti viruses and maintain utilities it shift the host file from. txt into. File that can't be edited unless using a trick of replacement..that in a magical way in returns to. file and delete every single code you add in it in. txt.. Even if u edit it as admin.. specifically IOBIT apps and utalities.. Thanks again friend

for this i have to say that i should look at your cleanup.

if your hostfile gets changed on cleanup means that either you have a virus or a corrupt system.
host files should not be changed on any cleanup!
Specially not permissions.

If i am correct i should check your system for corruption or virus

sometimes adding websites to hosts doesn't get blocked
alternatively, I use this to get the addresses and add them to hosts
Code:
nslookup website.com

thank you for this resource~ @Spycrawler Nightfire

Actually that is not true. There are several malware programs that add their own entries to the Host file in order to trick people and redirect traffic to where they want. I will give you one example:

Let's say I add in the host file this line. 10.0.0.10 facebook.com and at 10.0.0.10 I run a small web server that has a copy-pasted fake facebook login page. Since the user typed Facebook in the browser or used a bookmark, he/she will think that its the legit site asking for username/password and will type them. After that, all my small fake server has to do, is store and forward those usernames/passwords to me (the attacker) and produce a random error. It will then restore the host entry to the real facebook and... you just had your password stolen. Now instead of facebook think of any web service (bank, work, personal webmail etc) and you can understand why some security apps clean up the host file.
