Write-protection switch

Some USB flash drives have a write-protection switch on the side or bottom.
The write-protection switch is useful for keeping the contents of your drive safe from malware when you need to view them on a public computer.

If your device has this switch, move it to the "Lock" position.
This action effectively sets all files, and the device itself, to read-only mode.

Using DiskPart to change read-only settings

You can use the Windows DiskPart command line utility to enable or disable read-only mode on your USB flash drive.

Press Win+R to open the Run box. Type diskpart and press Enter.
If you receive a User Account Control prompt asking you for permission to continue, click Yes.
At the DISKPART> prompt, type list disk and press Enter.
From the size of the disk, you should be able to figure out which one is your USB flash drive.
we know that Disk 1 is our USB flash drive because its size is listed as 14 GB.

Select your USB flash drive with the select disk command. we want to work with disk 1, so the command is select disk 1.
You can list the attributes of the disk with the command attributes disk.
To clear the read-only attribute (making the disk writable), use the command attributes disk clear readonly.
Or, to set the read-only attribute (making the flash disk write-protected), use the command attributes disk set readonly.
When you are finished, type exit to quit the program.

Change security permissions in flash drive properties

If using diskpart, as detailed in the section above,
does not work to clear the read-only attribute of a USB flash drive, the security permissions may need to be changed.
It is possible that security permissions have been set so that all users only have Read permissions to files on the flash drive.
To check if security permissions need to be changed, follow the steps below.

*Note*

If the steps below do not work for your flash drive, it may be preventing permission changes due to being locked by a security program of some kind.

In these cases, you may not be able to make the flash drive writable.

Open My Computer or File Explorer.
Find the USB flash drive in the list of drives connected to the computer.
Right-click on the flash drive icon and select Properties in the pop-up menu.
On the Properties window, click the Security tab.
Click the Edit button below the Group or user names section.
In the Permissions window, click the Everyone entry, if not already selected. In the Permissions for Everyone section, make sure the Allow checkbox is checked for the Modify entry. If it is not checked, check the box.
Click the OK button on the Permissions and Properties window to save the security permissions change.
If you want to set the flash drive to read-only for all users, in step 6, uncheck all boxes in the Allow column, except for the Read entry.

This method will work for many cases but not for some.. I had tested this method in my memory cards it worked and for 2 pen-drives too.. but in some cases we cant overwrite permissions of some selected companies pen drives.

Overall good method. in 95% of cases this method works except few. :)

Thank you for your replay, was wondering which producers made a dissent product and internal state of a pendrive, set by physical means cannot be overwritten by a system.

I don't think it has something to do with the manufacturer. It probably has to do with the type of damage each stick has. Just because some USB drives are unreadable, it doesnt mean they all have the same type of damage.

As an example, some pen drives could have an electric overcharge to the chips which cant be fixed with the above method, some could just have file system errors due to an early ejection while writing, which is fixable by this method. Some may have liquid applied which is unfixable and some others just an error on the partition table which is fixable by this method. Some may just have the write-protect switch broken.

All the above problems will produce more or less the same kind of error (unreadable stick) but due to the different source/type of the problem, it may be fixable or not.

I have a Kingston pen drive that would read on a computer, but not on an android box. It functions perfectly on any computer. It used to be in a car for music to be played through a USB port on it and formatted in FAT32. When on an Android box, it was tried in both FAT32 and NTFS and exFAT format, but it could not read the files (specifically movie files). I am going to try your tutorial just to see if it makes a difference as it would not seem to be the same issues as said in this thread. But if it works I will be a happy camper.

Just as a side note, I had ordered a bunch of 128Gb pen drives from Gearbest and could not get them to work in either FAT32 or NTFS formatting, but they worked great in exFAT formatting. I am going to try those too, for giggles, as I cannot rely on them for important stuff without knowing they will actually read (Gearbest refunded me and did not want them back anyways). Thank you for an interesting tutorial ... knowledge is power!!

The USB manufacturer Kanguru states:
" Overall, a USB based write protection switch is extremely reliable as long as it is fully hardware based or utilizes a combination of hardware and software like found in our drives. The write protection within our drives is contained in two locations. The first is within the operating system where the device registers as a read only device. The second method is provided directly by the controller on the device itself. The reasoning for the second method is so in case the registry is corrupted in any away, the controller would be able to still enforce the write protection property. "

With the register base read-only flag you need to be aware that it is set after the device is connected, it is going to be in read-write state in the first place and then is going to be set to read-only, leaving a windows of opportunity.

There are also useful 'usb write blockers' that can protect any usb device from being written to. Please be avare that cheapy 'data blocker' is a different sort of a creature.
I have not looked into this subject before so please do not consider me an expert, just find this type of knowledge to be of useful type so started diging
Peace to all.

Well, I tried the Kingston pen drive and it initially worked in the android box I have and the one that it initially failed to read in and it failed shortly after that to read again. It also showed in my PC, but refused to allow transfer to the drive. It is now residing in the circular filing bin as the warranty is up (3yrs) and I no longer have patience for it. Pen drives are relatively inexpensive for what I am using it for. Thanks for this tutorial.
