i was installing different os( xp,7 lite) for checking purpose. although i never had his problem before but this time instead of creating sperate (350 mb) system partition , somehow it created system partition in d drive which is full of data.now i only have two partition c and d. d is almost full and c size is only for os.
now when i install new os then it doesnt create new system partition but using it from d drive. now it may create system instability bcoz upon new os installation sys partition needs to be cleared.

so i booted in linux live and dlc boot and deleted every hidden system file of system partition in d drive including system vol information folder.

now when i tried to install os ,,it still detecting d drive as a system partition.

What should i do now?

Give us some more data, for example: are the both of OS's on the same physical drive? Did you delete or format partitions using Linux GParted or using Windows disk management during install and so on. It would be interesting to see some pictures, if possible.

how about a screenshot of your drive configuration. that will make it far easier for us to give you suggestions. i have one, but i really need to see your partition / drive layout before making the suggestion. you can either download partition wizard from here install and open it and take a screenshot, or simply go to administrative tools, computer management, disk management and take a screenshot.

thanks for replying..
here is the screen shot..

i only had one os at a time, no dual boot. and i created and deleted partition only through Windows disk management during install of xp and win7 and 8.1 lite.
i think it messed up at xp installation, it didnt inform me about system partition and and made it in d drive, and later every windows os was unable to change it, even though i deleted every hidden system file with linux mint in d drive.

Time to reformat the entire drive. Save the important files somewhere else and perform a clean install. This time pay close attention to what you're doing while creating partitions and choosing the system partition.

what you should of done is make sure you have your files that you don't want to lose on a separate drive. when installing an os always wipe the drive completely to avoid bleed through from your previous install. now if this is the only drive you have and you don't want to get rid of the os yet that you get yourself a copy of partition wizard and then shrink c and d as small as you can, combine the free space from both by moving c right next to d again, now create a new partition and move whatever with fit on it from d to it. now if you still have files on d that you don't want to lose then once again d to as small as you can get away with, move c next to it, expand the new partition to use the newly created free space, move more files from d to the new partition. now if you need to move more files repeat the last set of instructions till only the boot files are left on d. on another not leave d at least 500 megs, cause if you're simply going back and forth between os's 10 will want 500megs for the system partition. now simply remove the the system partitions drive letter and you should be good to go. worst case you'll have to install a fresh os but your partitions will be at least be setup properly for it. now on installing a fresh os you may get a letter assigned to the system partition again just simply go in and remove it letter.

shhedo, thanks for replying,, i always pay close attention to everything while installing os, but what could i do if win xp doesnt create seperate sys partition and tries to install it in other existing partition without informing.

2635599 , although i can do splitting drive and copying data but i think that there should be other some workaround to solve this problem.afterall this is not a very complicated prob. probably there are some hidden boot sector file which we cant see or delete normally through linux.
probably my whole point with experimenting with different os was to find interesting problems and things and be excited about it, and get fun while solving it and get more fun after solving it. i have a weird taste in fun. :)

2635599 i'm trying to find solution on google but cant find something useful.. maybe my keywords are not correct.. so pls search google maybe you can find some solution. thanks.

Do this. That's all and that's it.

I'm not an expert and maybe is a stupid thing...but were you installing XP + win7 in a partition of 25GB?
Did you divide a 25 GB partition for a dual boot? Or was you installations indipendents, in different times?
Maybe OS exeeds in D: because of a too little partition. But i seems strange...

Othe strange thing...you talk about XP and win7 in your first message and a system partition of 350MB...7 creates a 100 MB partition, and XP very smaller if i remember well...so who creates the 350MB partition?
Other strange thing...win doesn't create a little second partition if you don't create a partition from unallocated memory...so, if it creates partition means that you changed partitions before formatting and installing...

Too many strange things : D it's time to have a deep wipe to all!

Undoubtedly the best advice. Always (and forever) perform a clean install, it's the safest. Remember: during an install, especially a proposed clean install of a new OS, it is highly advisable to have any critical files saved elsewhere and offline. Better be safe than sorry. How to do a clean install of Windows? Ask our friend Google. Do not worry about mistakes. If you don't make mistakes, you don't make anything.

For a quick sulotion you need to download EaseUS Partition Master 12.5 cd boot and use the program to set the C drive as Prime and active .

Or you can just boot from Windows 7 just to create a system partition and then cancel right before installing to format with Xp instead.

Just to refresh my memory, Win 7 32 bit? A lot of good info here. Here's something else you can try.
As we know, during setup, Windows must identify which drive is your primary boot drive in order to correctly configure the and bootloader. However, if you are installing Windows with a larger USB drive, Windows setup can sometimes be unable to tell which drive is an external USB drive and which drive is a local disk that Windows should be installed to. Besides, if you have configured your BIOS to boot from the USB drive first always, Windows also cannot reliably determine which one is the boot drive. Also, some USB sticks present themselves to Microsoft Windows as a regular drive instead of identifying as a bootable USB.

Note: this error does not normally apply to EFI and installations of Windows.
  • Eject and re-insert the USB.

To fix the error, you can eject and re-set the USB drive to force Windows to re-arrange its ordering of the drives.

Step 1: When you see the error message "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition," remove your Windows USB drive from the PC (don’t worry, this is safe since no read or write operations are being made from the USB disk).

Step 2: Press the red "X" button in the top right corner to exit the installation wizard. Then, you will revive a warning: "To install or upgrade Windows, you must run Windows installation. Are you sure you want to cancel Windows installation?" Now, you just need to click "Yes" to continue.

Step 3: Start installation from the beginning without inserting USB drive.

Step 4: You’ll see an error about Windows is unable to locate setup files, and asks you to load a CD/DVD driver for Windows setup to proceed. At this time, click "OK" button to go back to the main setup window again.

Step 5: Re-insert your USB drive at this point, and then select "Install Now" again.

Now, everything should go as planned since Windows has been forced to recognize that the setup USB is a removable drive, and it can identify the correct boot drive to install the Windows boot files.

Tips: if the problem still remains, try using a different USB drive since some pen drives are known to cause issues.

However, this method only works well on Windows 7, and it may not help you when you install Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. At this time, try using the following method which will be appropriate for any Windows versions.
I googled this and found it here,

OR:

  1. Set your PC to boot from DVD via BIOS
  2. Put the DVD in and let it load .
  3. During install, At the INSTALL NOW window, press SHIFT+F10 . Boot to the System Recovery Options screen and select the Command Prompt option.
  4. MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE DRIVE YOUR INSTALLING WINDOWS TO NOT ANOTHER. In the CMD window, type in Each Command and Press <ENTER> Key as follows:

    DiskPart <ENTER>
    list disk <ENTER>
    select disk 0 <ENTER>
    clean <ENTER>
    create partition primary align=1024 <ENTER>
    format fs=ntfs <ENTER> (Will Take a While)
    assign <ENTER>
    active <ENTER>
    exit <ENTER>
    exit <ENTER>
  5. After it completes, exit the INSTALL COMPLETELY and reboot.
  6. Once you are back in, go about installing Windows just DO NOT ALLOW Windows to create a new partition, use the only one there.
Windows should now be able to (hopefully) install. Don't know what else to suggest other than to look back over at just what the h*** you did in the first place to get in this situation and go over ALL of these suggested procedures by us here THOROUGHLY and patiently. Someone also suggested some software readily available here on site that will easily solve your issues. I wish you luck. :)
