AfterCodecs is a suite of Adobe CC plugins bringing user the best and missing codecs for faster exports. It is embedded exporter for After Effects, Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, offering user codecs ProRes and h264 for fast and high-quality video rendering. AfterCodecs is regularly updated with new codecs, features or speed improvements. Autokroma has its fork of FFmpeg called ffkroma. The last development was the HAP encoders.
AfterCodecs brings user with consistency all the codecs and features need:
- ProRes, even on Windows;
- H264 8K (not limited to 4K) and a fast YouTube export profile easy to use;
- HAP codecs;
- All 4 HAP codecs with faster algorithms;
- Works without Quicktime - Finally, say goodbye to Quicktime.
- Low bitrates videos are of better quality than before;
- Choose the efficiency you need: fast encoding for your previews or low filesize for final delivery;
- Save time directly in AE render queue without touching the command line and having huge temporary files;
- AfterCodecs ProRes rendering is on average 15% faster than Quicktime;
- FileSize targetting.
- Filling the codec gap;
- Better and faster compression;
- More to come and FFmpeg sponsoring.
What is new in version 1.6.1 (Released on March 25, 2019):
- H264 Low-resolution color shift when re-imported into Adobe software fixed (in the Encoding Options popup a message will now tell you if the rendered file will be re-importable into Adobe software or not);
- PPro / AME :
- Individual audio tracks options Mac OSX bug fix;
- User can now export audio in 4.0 ambisonic WYZX / WYXZ formats;
- Filesize estimations for HAP codecs improved.
- Misc bug fixes;
- Using ffkroma 4.1-100 please update if you are not using the Windows installer.
- VR360 tag user renders automatically! On PPro / AME CC 2019+ "Auto" will detect 360 / 3D footage automatically, but you can also choose manually "Monoscopic," "Stereoscopic Left-Right" or "Stereoscopic Top-Bottom";
- Experimental GIF encoder (extension will automatically change to .gif, cannot contain audio);
- New global options:
- Disable AVX512 (Intel accelerated instructions) that seem to be the source of a crash on some workstations;
- Append encoding options to render as a filename.
- Bugs fix:
- Hap Q Alpha No Snappy was buggy;
- OSX: editing Quality, Speed, GOP input values with the h keyboard is possible again;
- OSX: H265 / HEVC can be opened in Quicktime Player now.
- Our new product BRAW Studio can be licensed from AfterCodecs and vice-versa;
- Using ffkroma 4.1-99 please update if not using the Windows installer.
- Using ffkroma 4.1-84 and not using FFmpeg anymore, you can delete the old FFmpeg executable it if you want;
- All color shifts with ProRes codecs are fixed now, please update;
- H264/H265: 8 bpc/10 bpc, TV Range/Full Range, YUV subsampling choice (4:2:0 / 4:2:2 / 4:4:4);
- H264 YouTube profile in.MP4 will render AAC audio now, please use .MOV that will generate WAVE audio so that Youtube has the best quality to re-encode after upload);
- PPro/AME: new audio layout to render all individual mono tracks separately, re-importable in Premiere Pro! "All Channels" layout is now called: "All: One Multi-Channel Track," "All: Individuals Mono Tracks" and "All: Individuals Stereo Tracks" for more clarity;
- AE: alpha channel interpretation (Straight or Premultiplied) and Matte color are now saved into files and work when reimporting into Adobe software;
- New "Open target directory at the end of each render" checkbox in Settings tab (it would not open the folder multiple times if rendering multiple times in the same folder, it will only bring the Explorer/ Finder window on the foreground);
- Hap codecs glitch bug fix;
- Memory optimization for very long renders.
System requirements:
OS: Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 (64-bit only);
Adobe CC 2014 to 2019 included;
Resolution: For x264 Quality < 100 and x265, dimensions of the video must be even (=> odd resolutions will fail).
Codecs:
ProRes: 6 official profiles (422 LT/Proxy/Normal/HQ/4444/XQ ) and two unofficial profiles (422 Ultra and 4444 Light). ProRes 4444 Light/4444/XQ supports the Alpha Channel;
HAP GPU accelerated codecs: 4 codecs (Hap, Hap Alpha, Hap, Q and Hap Q Alpha), user can choose if it wants to compress frames and how many CPU chunks need, and for Hap and Hap Alpha user can choose its compression algorithm (each have their tradeoff between speed and quality);
x264: best H264 / AVC implementation, outperforming both Adobe Media Encoder and QuickTime H264. A special easy-to-use Youtube Upload profile is provided;
x265: files are ~25% lighter than x264 for the same quality, but slower encoding;
x264 RGB: same as x264 but avoids YUV colorspace, best for storing separate channels in one video (UV map, Alphas…) for power users only.
Known Limitations:
AE on OSX: Rendering multiple output modules in parallel for the same queue item does not work;
Interlacing: lower field first in H264 recognized as top field first by Adobe;
Do not use the ProRes for broadcast. Always test hardware and software. It is a reverse engineered version of ProRes not approved by Apple; for example, le ProRes 4444’s Alpha channel does not seem to be accepted by Blackmagic Hyperdeck Studio Mini;
There seems to be an issue with High DPI screens on OSX (4K / 5K), press SHIFT+ESC to put the window back in the top left corner.
Install notes:
1. Run the installation;
2. Enjoy!
