Hi guys.
I have a very peculiar issue with my external HDD.
when i try to copy data to one of my external HDD (seagate 160gb) from my laptop it gives the speed of 72 kb/s but when i do the same process using my desktop, everything goes smooth i.e. copies at the maximum speed.
And when i connect my other external hdd to the laptop, there is no issue whatsoever.
my laptop specs are
AMD Ryzen 5, 8GB, 512 GB (NVME).
Windows 10 Home fully updated.
donno whats causing this issue.
any suggestions are welcome

If you use Windows 10, right click on the Start menu and select "Device Manager" from the list. Look for Universal Serial Controllers an double click each entry and look on the "Energy management" tab. Remove the check mark to prevent Windows from turn off the USB port. Maybe the ports are using lower energy.

Check these things out and maybe they'll help provide an answer. :) :)

1.Too many applications are working with the drive in the meantime.
2. Your external hard drive is too full and almost has no free space.
3. There are too many fragments on your external hard drive.
4.Is your external HDD formatted NTFS?
5.if you are experiencing slow speeds, it is set to the default Quick removal. Simply switch the setting to Better performance and select OK.

You may also want to Google "Disk Write Caching" for some important info as well.

Reinstall External HDD (Seagate 160GB) drivers (under Computer Management>>Device Manger>>Disk Drives>>right click in your HDD then click uninstall driver >> restart computer)

I would try downloading AMD chipset driver program here amd.com/en/support and run it see if any updates to you're machine are missing and record results. Then run crystal disk mark on your external hdd while connected to your laptop using this crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskmark/ and post results.
I've been using a Ryzen based laptop and had to install drivers via the tool above as Windows didn't pick the correct drivers.
Sounds like a driver issue with your laptop if the external hard drive can write at decent speeds on your other machine.

Sorry to hear that, can you test another drive like a USB stick (preferably with the same USB specs as your external HDD?) on that machine?
Best of luck

A few things to consider.
Is your External HD 2.0?, how old is it?
Reason is older HDs really get slow when you try and dump large files all at once for example 20 or more TB of data or really large video files. Now you said this is not happening when you pull info from it to your computer that's usually normal since your PC can manage data better than the HD

Maybe this will help.

  • 1.Right click on the USB drive and select properties
  • 2.Select the Hardware tab
  • 3.Under All Disk Drives, highlight your USB drive and select Properties
  • 4.Select the Policies tab and select Optimize for performance.
  • 5.Press OK twice, and your transfer speeds should increase dramatically
Note that when your drive is optimized for performance you'll need to use the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the taskbar to eject the drive - otherwise you'll risk corrupting your data by just removing the drive from the port.

or try this but i do believe someone posted similar info.

Go to
1. Control panel
2. System and Maintenance
3. Administrative tools
4. Run services shortcut
Once the services program loads find the services called Background intelligent transfer service and stop it
also right click on the same service and click properties then change the start value to manual or disabled this should also fix the USB copy and paste problem
