Parrot is a worldwide community of developers and security specialists that work together to build a shared framework of tools to make their job easier, standardized and more reliable and secure.

Parrot OS, the flagship product of Parrot Security is a GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian and designed with Security and Privacy in mind. It includes a full portable laboratory for all kinds of cyber security operations, from pentesting to digital forensics and reverse engineering, but it also includes everything needed to develop your own software or keep your data secure.
Secure

Always updated, frequently released with many hardening and sandboxing options abailable. Everything is under your complete control.
Free (as in freedom)

Feel free to get the system, share with anyone, read the source code and change it as you want! this system is made to respect your freedom, and it ever will be.
Lightweight

We care about resources consumption, and the system has proven to be extremely lightweight and run surprisingly fast even on very old hardware or with very limited resources.
Portable and universal

Our tools are designed to be compatible with as many devices as possible via containerization technologies like Docker or Podman. Feel free to use the Parrot tools on Windows, Mac OS or any other Linux distribution without changing your habits.

Pentest distributions

Pentest distributions are famous for integrating only security tools, allowing easy root access and taking down all the security system barriers that may influence the workflow of a pentester.

Parrot was designed to be a very comfortable environment for security experts and researchers. It includes many basic programs for daily use which pentesting distributions usually exclude (at the cost of less than an additional gigabyte of storage). This choice was taken to make Parrot not only a good system to perform security tests, but also a good environment where you can write reports, build your own tools, and communicate seamlessly with teammates, without the need for additional computers, operating systems or configuration.

Our goal is to allow any professional pentester to make a whole security test from the beginning, to the report with just a Parrot ISO and an average laptop.
Secure distributions

Parrot includes its own sandbox system obtained with the combination of Firejail and AppArmor with custom security profiles.

User applications in Parrot are protected and "jailed" to limit the damages in case the system is compromised.

All this additional security comes with a cost: it is harder to adopt bad behaviors on Parrot. For instance it is not possible to log in as root with the whole desktop environment, or to start critical applications like browsers, media players or advanced document readers with unnecessary privileged permissions.

The user can still open root consoles, launch security tools with privileged permissions and use the system without limits. The only thing that changes is that all the critical user applications are now protected from very bad behaviors and common exploit techniques, and the damages caused by advanced exploits are very limited.
Forensics distributions

Digital forensics experts need an environment that does not compromise their proof.

Parrot comes with automount functions disabled by default, to allow forensics acquisitions to be performed in a safe way. The global automount policy is configured in a redundant way in all the layers of the system stack, from the noautomount kernel option passed by default at boot, to the specific file manager settings to disable auto mount and plug&play features.

Don't forget that the disks are still recognized by the system, and the system will mount them without protections if the user accidentally open them.

The no-automount behavior is consistent and stable, but no protection is provided in case of accidental mounts. A write blocker is always recommended in any digital forensics scenario.

Who Parrot Security is made for:

Security Experts
Digital forensics experts
Engineering and IT Students
Researchers
Journalists & Hacktivists
Wannabe Hackers
Police officers and special security institutions

@skip1 Thanks m8. I've tried this distro in the past. It is really good for the "private" type of people. It's pretty light but action-packed none the less. The only thing I didn't like is the Debian base, but that's because I'm a lazy SOB who's used to Ubuntu-based distros (please do not tell me that Ubuntu is based on Debian, please!!! I know - but they're different bowls of soup anyway!).

@mkrleza | Yea I love that it's light on resources but still provides so much funtionality even as a daily driver. People have different tastes when it comes to linux flavours...to each his own! Either way it's a great distro to play with and learn from, the documentation is nothing short of excellent and provides the user with ample ability to learn to develop new skills.

I think you may like it depending on distro preference. Super light, great tools baked in updated through Debian Testing channel. Debian usually further behind Arch, Fedora from what I have gathered but this is a great stable distro with tons of features and dedicated community development.

This is a generic reply.
There are Linux distros that require a specific way of creating bootable media or require root passwords during install. Especially security or pen testing oriented ones. I would recommend that you visit distrowatch website, find the distro you're interested in and you'll find what you need. If there's no answer there then there are links to the distros' main web pages.

As @mkrleza mentioned google is your friend. Since no direct links are allowed here I advice you go to parrotos website, they have extensive documentation on use. As far as tools included, many are included in Kali and have better documentation there in terms of use and instruction. Best of luck to you buddy have fun be safe.
