Here's a quick tutorial on how to install VMware Tools on a Linux guest machine

1. After creating a Linux guest machine in VMware - boot into the machine

2. After you've booted into Linux guest machine click on the VM tab and then click "Install VMware Tools"

3. A mounted drive should appear. If you don't see it either set up your desktop to show mounted drives or just enter it through file manager

4. Open the mounted drive and double click the archive to open it

5. Choose a location where you want to extract it. The easiest way is to just drag & drop to the Home folder (cause when you enter the terminal you should be in he Home folder automatically)

6. Enter the Terminal (or Konsole, or whatever you use on your particular distro) and WITHOUT " "

"ls" for the list of files and folders
enter "cd vmware-tools-distrib"

7. Enter the "ls" again to see if you are in the right folder. There should be vmware-install.pl file there

8. Type - "sudo ./vmware-install.pl" - WITHOUT " " and then enter your user/root password

sudo - tells Linux to run as super-user (like Run as Administrator in Win)
./ - tells Linux to run the file from the current directory

9. Press Enter to all questions that follow. When done reboot VM Guest machine. That's it.

This tutorial was made on Zorin OS, but will work on all Ubuntu based distros as well as any other Linux with possible slight variations - all you really need to know is how to enter the proper directory and run the file as super-user.

Not IS - ls (like London Sofia)...
And I don't see the vmware-tools-distrib folder.

Did you extract the archived file to Home folder?

Repeat steps 3 - 5.

If you extracted to the Desktop then after step 5 enter:

cd /home/<username>/Desktop (I think that's it on Zorin)

be careful about the capital "D" - Linux is sensitive to lower and upper caps.

then continue with step 6. The tutorial was made for Home folder and you extracted to Home/Desktop.

To keep it simpler - just extract the archive to Home and do the exact steps all over again.

@Mikitok
I presume that you want to try Linux and that you've chosen Zorin because it's very Windows-like. That is really great and I endorse it wholeheartedly!

But first, you should learn Linux file and directory structures. It is so much different than Windows.
Then familiarize yourself with the basic terminal commands. There are a lot of differences there also (maybe you've noticed that Windows uses "\" and Linux "/" - that is just the first thing that dropped into my mind)

As much as Zorin may look like Windows - it's a whole different beast.

You can use it as-is for daily tasks like web browsing, watching movies, etc. But to unleash the full power of Linux - there is only one way -> TERMINAL. A lot of experienced users don't even use Software managers for example. They install programs through terminal commands. And there are tweaks that you can make through the command line that would amaze you.

Hope you stick with it and progress. Just be patient and watch some of the thousands of tutorials on youtube. Good hunting!

Bravo!

No need to restart PC. Restart Zorin. Click on Zorin "Z" (bottom left) and reboot!

OK. Click on Zorin "Z", go to System Settings, find DIsplay (not Desktop), and find change resolution. When I boot up in a couple of hours I'll PM you the directions. In fact I'll PM you now and we can continue there so we don't bump this thread anymore. You can ask me anything in the PM. OK?
