Hello my friends
Firstly, Happy New Year and Merry Christmas.
Secondly, I have several movies in AVI format, and whenever I play them, the image does not appear, but I only hear the sound, and this message appears:

I tried converting these movies with more than one program, but nothing new.
Can someone help me solve this problem

Try K-Lite Codec Pack, that should fix most codec issues.

Not 100% sure cause the mediasubtype is unknown, but the format looks like it's Indeo5... Man that is old. You can tell from the resolution (160x128) but I haven't heard indeo5 in ages. Since Indeo is Intel's proprietary codec its hard to find free software to play but... windows has a license for it so...

Open a CMD with Admin privileges and type cd C:\Windows\SysWOW64 press enter and then regsvr32 ir50_32.dll and now almost anything will be able to play the indeo/avi files. If you have a light version of windows... good luck.

Edit: if you do have k-Lite, Find and run in Start menu: "Manage 32-bit VFW and ACM codecs", scroll down and you will find the indeo codecs there (it does the same thing as I showed above but with a mouse click)

Hope it helped.

Unfortunately, my friend has the same problem. He needs the encoding code NUB1

Yes, my friend, they are films of some religious lessons that were filmed with a Nokia phone

In the avi days I came across many unplayable files that were encoded in a proprietary format.

Trying to find the codec after so many years is a lost cause. Instead use a format converter.

There are many brands which have built in codecs for old files, one of them will work. Download 3 to 4 converters and see what works.

@Makow1967, I have been using the VLC media player for years, and unless there is something wrong (corruption?) with the AVI files I have yet to come across a file that VLC couldn't play correctly.

The newer, updated version of VLC is suppose to be able to play and video file,
It does for me. I would also have the Klite codec mega pack installed.

@znop01 @RedDove and others, there are 2 types of codecs, free and, not free also called propriety codecs. As you guessed, vlc can play all the free ones, like mpeg 2 and 4, mov, vp9, wmv hevc av1 and others but can not play propriety ones.
For example, check the RED cameras and their file format r3d. Only their app can play back those files and premiere and other editors with a plugin addition. VLC only shows a black screen with the timer running.

The same goes for this case that the codec NUB1/2/3 belongs to Nokia, and only software that license it from Nokia (ie pay) can play those files.

Hope it helped.
