YouTube users have started posting screenshots showing a pop-up warning that their player will be blocked after three videos. The warning actually states that YouTube will prevent them from continuing to watch clips on the platform unless they disable their ad blocker or add the website to their "whitelist".
"Ads enable YouTube to remain free for billions of users around the world," the notice said. Also, YouTube "advises" users to opt for a YouTube premium subscription to avoid ads, in which case "creators would still get paid for what they do." Before these warnings, YouTube only showed pop-up notifications to ad blocker users reminding them that this was a violation of the terms of use, and later a timer was added to the notifications to give users time to read them.
The new warnings are "part of a small experiment that YouTube is conducting globally," which requires users to turn off ad blockers and allow ads to run on the platform or to subscribe to YouTube Premium.
If users persist in using the ad blocker, YouTube could prevent them from watching the video. Currently, the new measures are applied to a small number of users.
